Conference on Wilderness and Old Growth Forest in Europe - SAVE THE DATE!

THE CONFERENCE ON WILDERNESS AND OLD GROWTH FOREST IN EUROPE

There will be a Conference on wilderness and old growth forest in Bratislava on 20/21st November. It will be held under the patronage of Her Excellency Zuzana Caputova, recently elected President of Slovakia and Goldman Prize winner, who will be participating.

You are warmly invited to attend and share your expertise. The purpose of the conference is twofold:

  • To assess progress with the old growth forest protection strategy. Since our Brussels conference in 2017 a range of projects is now being implemented, and the conference will discuss next steps.
  • It is the 10th anniversary of our involvement in the 2009 EU Parliamentary Resolution supporting wilderness, passed by a 538-vote mandate. In tandem with our partners we have developed a number of new initiatives aimed at significantly strengthening this agenda.

With strong focus on climate change and utilising ecosystem services, the programme will include:

  • Launching a European Wilderness Forum, to provide collective representation for the leading areas in Europe
  • A new toolkit for application of wild nature enterprise
  • Results of mapping and carbon projects for primary/old growth forest
  • Introducing the new IUCN Task Force on Rewilding
  • Key elements for a 10-year restoration strategy

With the 2020 EU Biodiversity Strategy currently being finalised, the UN Decade of Restoration underway shortly, and issues arising from the EU Green Infrastructure Strategy, Forestry Strategy and Renewable Energy Resolution, this Conference comes at a critical moment for old growth forest and wilderness habitats in general.

Together with President Caputova’s team, the Conference will develop an Action Plan with key recommendations. Much can be achieved from this, and we look forward to hearing from you.

Because we are paying for the venue this time, we are having to levy a small charge of 100 euro for the two days – let us know if this presents any problem for you. The payment of the fee will be administered through our Eventbrite account, which will soon be sent to you.
