2022 will be dedicated to the places we love - mountains. Last year, on 16 December, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution proclaiming 2022 the International Year of Sustainable Mountain Development. The resolution was proposed by the Government of the Kyrgyz Republic and sponsored by 94 governments.
The declaration of the International Year of Sustainable Mountain Development aims at creating visibility for sustainable mountain development. It will also foster further collaboration to protect and conserve these precious ecosystems.
The resolution encourages Member States, international and regional organizations and all relevant stakeholders to highlight the importance and value of mountain ecosystems. It invites the Mountain Partnership, in close collaboration with others, to facilitate the observance of the International Year.
The resolution was initiated on occasion of the 20th anniversary of International Year of Mountains and the first Global Mountain Summit that adopted Bishkek Mountain Declaration in 2002. The 2002 International Year of Mountains witnessed crucial steps taken toward establishing the Carpathian Convention. For updates and further information, please click here.
