Have you every imagined the Austrian Alps without skiing? Or even thought about that water resources here could decline in the next decades? Mountain areas play a fundamental role in our lives. Nevertheless, we have exposed mountain regions, and the natural and cultural resources they harbour, to a high level of risk. Examples of this are evident across the world both in empirical facts and theoretical models. However, simple day-to-day happenings sometimes impact us at a higher level. Last September in Salzburg the cross on the summit of Großvenediger was close to stop symbolizing the peak. It had to be removed due to the high temperatures during last summer that thawed the permafrost.

 From Data to Knowledge, from Knowledge to Action

An interdisciplinary mountain platform for scientists, representatives from policy, economy, and management, interested in the Carpathian mountains. It is organized by the S4C initiative, the network of Carpathian scientists.

The Carpathian Convention has been present with a Workshop on the interaction between Carpathian science and politics. A special focus was set on the implementation of the Biodiversity Protocol.

A MoU between the S4C and the Carpathian Convention has been signed.

Monitor II project - Final Conference

The Final Conference of MONITOR II is designed to bring together experts, researchers, policy and decision makers, practitioners from various disciplines as well as concerned stakeholders for an interdisciplinary, transnational exchange of views on the further development of strategies and technologies for the management of natural hazards.
Within the broad range of hazards, MONITOR II is specifically focusing on floods and landslides, as prominent examples of natural hazards.

Signature of the Memorandum of Understanding

Representatives of the relevant Slovak and Austrian national and regional authorities as well as the leading motorway companies of both countries have signed a MoU which establishes the framework for future cooperation and coordinated activities for protecting and revitalizing the ecological corridor between the Alps and Carpathians. 
The conference has been organized in the framework of the Alpine-Carpathian-Corridor (AKK) project.
