Celebrate the Carpathians through Carpathian Day on or around 26 September! This is a yearly celebration of our diverse and common identities, landscapes, heritage and love for the Carpathian region.
The Carpathian region holds a wealth of traditions, cultural sites, biodiversity, and unique habitats and species. Carpathian Day aims to create annual momentum for highlighting these great cultural and natural landscapes and foster a sense of pride and belonging across the region. Celebrating Carpathian Day helps cultivate a Carpathian identity, raise environmental and cultural awareness of mountain landscapes, and inspire further protection and sustainable development of local communities.

The Carpathians are characterized by longstanding human-nature interactions. This Carpathian Day, integrate both natural and cultural heritage to celebrate the voices, connections and traditional knowledge of all who live in the Carpathian region.

EVENTS IN AUSTRIA

Type of Event: Workshop
Description: "Carpathians for Youth" workshop will take place during the Youth Green Conference in Austria! This workshop invites young participants to explore the natural and cultural treasures of the Carpathians and reflect on their importance for Europe’s shared future. By drawing parallels between the Carpathians with the Pyrenees and the Alps, participants from Slovenia, Spain, and Austria will uncover common challenges and opportunities for mountain regions—from preserving wilderness to sustaining local traditions. Through the interactive workshop we will raise awareness of how youth can play an important role in protecting and celebrating these unique landscapes. EVENTS IN HUNGARY
Host: Ministry of the Environment of the Czech Republic

Type of Event: Workshop
Description: Regular yearly meeting attended by representatives of public administration, expert institutions, the non-profit sector, and other organisations in the region, contributing to the exchange of information and ideas necessary for the active implementation of the Carpathian Convention and its protocols in the Czech Republic. The agenda includes a variety of lectures and a space for discussion and sharing of experiences, updates on the implementation of the Carpathian Convention both in the country and at the international level, as well as information about other activities and projects taking place in the Carpathians.

Description: As part of the Student Conference of Conservation Science (SCCS Europe), which is an event devoted to capacity building of students and early career researchers in the field of Conservation, a day was added to the programme devoted to the Carpathian Region, Carpathian Convention and Carpathian Biodiversity Framework. Participants from Carpathian countries were invited and inputs related to addressing the diverse challenges of conservation in Carpathian region were made.

Type of Event: Photo Exhibition and Conference
Description: The organizers invite you to the photo exhibition "Carpathian Mountains – Floristic Rarities," organized by the "Dimitrie Brândză" Botanical Garden in Bucharest.
The event aims to highlight, in an accessible and attractive way for all visitors, the uniqueness and importance of rare floristic species from the Carpathian Mountains. Through the selected photographs, the public will be able to discover the unparalleled beauty and scientific significance of this flora, while also understanding the need to protect the natural heritage.
The exhibition will be open from September 19 to October 5, 2025, and will take place in situ, in the Administrative Building of the Botanical Garden (Șoseaua Cotroceni, no. 32), with free access.
The opening will take place on Friday, September 19, 2025, starting at 10:00 AM, in the presence of guests from the academic, scientific, and cultural fields. It will be followed by a conference dedicated to the flora of the Carpathian Mountains, which will take place from 11:00 AM to 1:30 PM, bringing together researchers, university staff, and specialists in botany, ecology, and biodiversity conservation. The lectures will address topics such as the conservation of rare floristic species, the current challenges of mountain habitats, and the role of botanical education in promoting Romania's natural values.
On October 26, 2025, starting at 10:00 AM and in the same space of the Botanical Garden, another conference will take place, bringing together faculty members and collaborators of the Faculty of Geography with the following scientific contributions:
- The Carpathians in digital perspective: Mapping and monitoring the Sphinx geomorphosite using UAV, Ionuț Șandric, Radu Irimia, Zenaida Chițu
- The relief of the Carpathians - between grandeur and ordinary, Iulian Săndulache
Geomorphosites as elements of the natural heritage of the Romanian Carpathians, Mihaela Verga
- The multifunctionality of Carpathian landscapes: benefits for nature and communities, Radu Tudor, Ileana Stupariu

EVENTS IN SLOVAKIA
Administration of the National Slingshot of the Low Tatras
Host: Protected landscape administration Cerová vrchovina - State Nature Conservancy of the Slovak Republic

Type of Event: Workshop
Description: This educational event takes place in the territory of European importance: Drienčanský karst. The program will be mainly dedicated to research environmental programs in the field with a focus on water and soil ecosystem. We will explain and try the popular iNaturalist science application, in which the public inserts data from nature serving scientists to research biodiversity. Since the natural environment in the country is influenced by people who live in it directly, we visit the local goat farm and learn to produce cheese.

Description:
Join participants of the International Carpathian School and discuss ways of cooperation for the sustainable development of this unique region. The event is organized within the framework of the project “Shifting towards Ecotourism in Protected Areas through Heritage Interpretation”, implemented by NECU with the support of the International Visegrad Fund. This year’s edition is dedicated to the official celebration of Carpathian Day in Ukraine, which has been included in the national calendar for the very first time.
Thematic areas to be discussed: Cultural heritage and traditional knowledge; Traditional ecological knowledge and tourism; Education for sustainable development; Interdisciplinary research in the fields of natural, social sciences and health; Water resources and management.
