Carpathian Network of Protected Areas (CNPA)

At the COP1, the Convention established the Carpathian Network of Protected Areas (CNPA) and constituted a thematic network of mountain protected areas in the Carpathians. The CNPA supports and develops necessary activities for the implementation of the Carpathian Convention and especially its Biodiversity Protocol.

The steering committee for the CNPA is composed of focal points nominated by each Party, and reports to the Carpathian Convention Implementation Committee through the Secretariat of the Convention.

The Carpathian Wetlands Initiative (CWI)

Initiated by the Slovak Republic on World Wetlands Day in February 2004, the Carpathian Wetlands Initiative (CWI) was established in order to contribute to the implementation of the Memorandum of Cooperation between the Convention on Wetlands (Ramsar Convention) and UNEP Vienna Programme Office – Secretariat of the Carpathian Convention.

CWI operates as a regional initiative within the framework of both the Ramsar Convention and the Carpathian Convention. CWI aims to facilitate the collaboration between the two Conventions and their Parties in conserving and wisely using wetlands in the Carpathian region.

The CWI Board is composed of the National Focal Points delegated by the Parties to the Carpathian Convention.
