UN Biodiversity Conference: Mountain Ecosystems Day
26 October 2026 | Yerevan, Armenia

Mountains are ecosystems of exceptional biodiversity and cultural value, sustaining water cycles, food systems, climate resilience, livelihoods and well-being far beyond mountain regions themselves. Yet mountain ecosystems are under severe pressure from the interconnected threats of climate change and biodiversity loss.

With the 17th Meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD COP17) taking place in the Caucasus – a recognized biodiversity hotspot – Mountain Ecosystems Day provides a timely opportunity to raise the profile of mountains within the CBD.

Mountain Ecosystems Day will convene actors across varying levels of governance, regions and sectors to strengthen collaboration and accelerate action for mountain biodiversity. The Day will provide a platform to connect political ambition with practical action for mountain countries, highlighting mountains as a cross-cutting ecosystem and advancing dialogue on financing and investment, indigenous peoples’ and local communities’ knowledge, science, regional cooperation and implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.

Don’t miss this chance to be part of the dialogue on strengthening collaboration and accelerating action for mountain biodiversity. Register here.

This event is open to individuals who will be physically present and have access to the Blue Zone at CBD COP17 in Yerevan, Armenia.

The Secretariat of the Carpathian Convention and some Parties will actively take part in Session 5 – From Global Goals to Regional Action.

This Session aims to highlight how regional platforms are a key instrument for translating the GBF’s global targets into coordinated action for mountain ecosystems: providing a space for countries to develop shared priorities and approaches, exchange experience, and coordinate implementation of the GBF in ways that reflect the specific characteristics and needs of mountain regions.
